Under the Wave off Ruakaka - A View of Te Whara
2023
Graeme Lee Main
After
The Great Wave Off Kanagawa. 裏浪沖川奈神 (1831)
By Hokusai and
Kanrin Maru 丸臨咸 (1860)
By Suzufuji Yujiro
An adaptation of one of the world's most iconic images. Using Photoshop I have tried to replicate the appearance of the original woodcut of the genius Hokusai, but given it a very personal Kiwi twist.
It depicts the ship Euterpe in a stormy sea, off Ruakaka, as it heads toward Auckland in 1874 near the end of its voyage from the United Kingdom. Te Whara (Bream Head off Whangarei) is in the background.
Onboard are Martin and Mary Armstrong, along with their 6 children. Martin and Mary were my great-great-grandparents. They were one family of many that came to New Zealand on this ship.
The Eutrepe, now renamed the Pride of India is still afloat, you can still go aboard her. She is housed at the San Diego Maritime Museum.
Printed in Ink on Ilford Galerie Fine Art Paper
