Sunflowers by Vincent Van Gogh (1888)

In just over a decade Van Gogh created approximately 2100 artworks, including around 860 oil paintings, most of them in the last two years of his life. His style is rough and dramatic, with vibrant colours and heavy brush strokes. I created two versions of my tribute to Van Gogh, substituting his Sunflowers with the New Zealand native Pohutukawa. The Pohutukawa flowers during our summer in late November and December and is known as New Zealand’s Christmas tree.

The first version was created in Photoshop, from a photograph I took of Pōhutukawa and then inserted into the original. The second is my attempt at painting like Van Gogh. Painting in acrylic rather than oils, I attempted to reproduce the heavy impasto technique utilised by Van Gogh.

The original was an oil on canvas measuring 95 cm x 73 cm

Version 1. Printed in Ink on Ilford Galerie Fine Art Paper.

Version 2. Acrylic on Canvas reproduced and printed in Ink on Ilford Galerie Fine Art Paper.
